The Begonia Society of San Francisco is dedicated to the culture, protection,and appreciation of begonias all over the world. The Begonia Society of San Francisco brings together people in the San Francisco bay area interested in the culture and propagation of begonias, and also serves an educational function in disseminating information about begonias to the public. Founded in 1937, it is one of the oldest begonia societies on the West Coast.

We publish a monthly newsletter, The San Francisco Begonian ...for both the amateur and the professional; the explorer, the scientist, the hybridizer, the grower and the blue-ribbon winner. As a member you'll be among the first to find out about recently discovered species, the latest hybrids, the newest growing "secrets': Discover new friends who share your amazement, excitement and delight growing these wonderful plants. We look forward to sharing what we have learned with you, and you sharing your experiences with us.

If you have acquired a few begonia and you would like to learn how to successfully grow and bloom them, the Begonia Society of San Francisco invites you to join us at our next meeting, usually held on the first Wednesday of each month (with a few exceptions) in the Recreation Room at the

    - Sweet Peas and 77th Anniversary Cake! Glennis Johnson (the Sweet Pea Lady) of Enchanting Sweet Peas will tell us all about these beautiful and fragrant flowers!

  • March 2
    - Into the Wilds of Brazil and Equador
    by Chen-Hao Hsu This presentation will cover plants, and in particular, Begonias that Chen-Hao has encountered on his most recent trips to Brazil and Ecuador. Chen-Hao will take us to the wilds of Equador and Brazil. This ought to be a real treat you do not want to miss!

  • April 6
    - Begonia Workshop
    Guided by Carol Notaras, Rob Cullison and Maurice Lin

    This month everyone is encouraged to bring in their plants that need some attention and with help from our local experts. Rob, Maurice and Carol, are going to help everyone fix their own plants. Members will be doing the work on their plants, such cutting back or repotting, with some expert advise.

    - Begonia Judging Tips and Pre Show Preparation
    - by Carol Notaras
    Find out the best way to clean and prepare your begonias to enter in a show. This is prep for anyone interested in making your plants look their best, AND if you want to enter plants in the Sacramento Begonia Show coming up.

    - Lead by Dan Alvear
    This workshop is for new and old growers that want to find out what they are doing wrong, and how to better grow their begonias. Bring your plants for Show and Tell, and find out how to improve your results!

    - Gesneriads: An Introduction by Keith Darby
    Come enjoy a slide show of what you missed - HUNDREDS of begonias to see and buy!

  • November 2
    - Saving Water With Begonias by Don Burns
    As we continue to work through an all time record breaking Exceptional Drought, learn how we, and our begonias can survive, and maybe even still thrive.

Monthly Meetings are held on the First Wednesday of most months from 7:30-9:30 pm Excluding January (no meeting) & other special events such as in December, June and July.

We meet in the Recreation Room, San Francisco County Fair Building, 1199 Lincoln Way. Parking in the rear of the building (enter from Lincoln Way at 10th Avenue intersection), or in Golden Gate Park.

      THE BEGONIA SOCIETY OF SAN FRANCISCO & YOU
  • We are a nonprofit, horticultural organization striving to promote and maintain public and scientific interest in research, preservation, development and distribution of Begonias throughout the world. Members find new friends in San Francisco Bay Area. Plant lovers like you are growing in windows, in greenhouses, in indoor light gardens and outside in temperate regions. We're working to make everyone aware of how much fun and how easy it is to grow Begoniass. You can help.

  • The Begonian, is a full color publication of the American Begonia society which is mailed out every other month. BSSF Members who are also a member of the American Begonia Society also receive this publcation which includes: branch and regional newsletters, articles on growing begonias, terrarium care, photos of new hybrids and registered begonias, monthly tips on caring for your begonias.

  • We are active in research ...to provide support for the identification of new species; to promote registration of worthy hybrids and to assist in the education of judges to accurate judging standards thorough clear documentation.

  • We promote growing and showing ...with affiliate societies throughout the country who encourage their members to show and promote begonias locally. The American Begonia Society provides cultural sheets and awards annually for best species and hybrid exhibit in each affiliate society's show.
